Chase Finally Increased the World of Hyatt Upgrade Offer, Well Sorta

The Chase World of Hyatt card is one of my favorite, if not favorite, hotel co-branded credit cards.  I grabbed one the day they came out but that is no longer an option for many with it now falling under Chase’s 5/24 rule.  When it launched Chase did offer what I called a puny upgrade offer to the old Hyatt cardholders.  I kept waiting for them to increase their 2,000 point offer to upgrade to the new World of Hyatt card but it never came.

I decided to go ahead an upgrade my wife’s card because I think it is a great everyday spend card for the first $15,000 each year. When taking the free night into account you can get over 3% in return on every dollar spent. Chase finally decided to increase the offer but I think this offer is actually worse for some people.

The New Upgrade Offer

Doctor of Credit reported that some people are being targeted for this new upgrade offer.  The old offer was for 2,000 World of Hyatt points once you upgraded your card.  The new offer is as follows:

  • 3,500 bonus points when upgraded (massive increase! insert sarcasm font)
  • Must make $1500 in purchases before June 30, 2019

If you are planning on shooting for the $15,000 in spend for the free night certificate then this is the better offer since you would complete that $1500 in spend anyway.  But if you don’t think you will then this is probably the lessor offer since the other one required no spend.

I am glad when an offer is increased, at least most of the time.  I can’t say this one is all that enticing though.  Chase should have made it at least 5,000 points, the amount they used to give away for simply adding an authorized user to cards.

Remember that when you upgrade your anniversary date remains the same as your old card.  So if you are going for the $15K free night spend you will only have until that date to complete it before it resets for another year.  If your anniversary is in June you are better off just waiting until it resets etc.

    • No you would need to close the old card before applying if you wanted the bonus. And it would have to be 24 months since you received the bonus on the old Hyatt card.
