Another MoviePass Price Reduction - Unbelievable Deal!

Another MoviePass Price Reduction – Unbelievable Deal!

MoviePass has been taking over the country by storm.  They have gone from several thousand users to almost 2 million users in the last 6 months.  The big push came when they lowered the price to $9.95 a month 6 months ago.  They then offered a discounted price lowering the price 12% but changed the billing to yearly.  They have decided to cut the price even further.

New Deal

The new deal is billed yearly as well.  It appears this is their new pricing format for the time being since they no longer offer monthly plans.  There are some potential issues with this set up that I will discuss further down.

The new plan is:

  • Only available to new members
  • $6.95 per month
  • $6.55 one time processing fee
  • $89.95 paid up front for the year

That gets you access to pretty much any 2D movie once every 24 hours.  It is reported that MoviePass covers 91% of all theaters in America.

This is truly an astonishing deal if you enjoy going to the movies.

Potential Downfalls

MoviePass has been in the news lately with some negativity.  Their CEO claimed that they tracked their users.  He then later came out and said that was not the case and offered an app update to correct any issues going forward.

MoviePass pulled out of some popular AMC Theaters when the two business went toe to toe with each other. And they shut down users accounts with little or no warning as to why.

It is unknown how this business model is sustainable so that is something to be wary of.  Since you are paying up front if this goes belly up you may be out some of your money.

MoviePass’ customer service is seriously lacking…as you can see from the comments in my review.  I even tried to tweet them a few weeks ago asking for a comment on their customer service issues and I never received a response.  It seems they have been growing faster than they can get people in there to help.

It has taken some new members several months to get their card as well.  They are not supposed to start the clock until the card ships but who knows if they will stick to that come the 12 month mark.

Conclusion

This really is a deal that is possibly too good to be true.  Even with all of the issues listed above I would go for the deal and use it early and often to ensure I recouped my investment.

I still have mine and I still love it.  But I have not had to deal with any issues yet.  I am on the $9.95 per month plan but I would change it to this if I could.  I even considered cancelling and setting up a new account, I may still do that.

If you are interested in the deal the MoviePass website has all the details.

What do you think?  Is this price low enough to get you to sign up?

  1. We love our Movie Pass. The only problem we have had is having to change the credit card in the app because the credit card account had to be closed due to possible fraud. The change hit too close to the time that they ran the card and it said it was not charged so it suspended the account. I sent a couple of emails and we were out of commission for about a week until they decided to run it again. It is working fine now. Just be sure if you are ever changing the cards in the app to do it right after it has been run for the month.

  2. I converted to the annual plan when it first came out, and after 3 months I’ve been to the theater about 20 times (including several National Theater plays and a number of special event classic and indie film presentations), so if it ended tomorrow, I’d still be miles ahead. Not to mention generating enough loyalty points for 4 free tickets, top status, and several buckets of popcorn. Customer service was absolutely GREAT on the phone (I called when folks were getting shut down for buying unauthorized 3D/premium shows and my theater charged a premium for a ‘legal’ show that was more than the Moviepass authorized price. The rep let me know the upper limit for my regular theater, verified that I was good to go, and explained how to make sure they only put up to that amount on the MP debit card). Prior to MP I went to the movies a couple of times per year, at most, so my local theater’s very happy!

    • Glad to hear it Jem….you may be the first report of being able to get a hold of someone!

I have had a great experience with mine so far too.

  3. Regardless of all the flak, I have used this with great success and bought all the family Christmas gifts with movie pass. We all love it and I’m not gonna punch a gift horse in the mouth. ( whatever!;)
It’s worth it , believe me this deal IS WORTH IT!!!!!!!!

    • That is where I am at but if I ever run into an issue I think it will be a big hassle to get it corrected. I am gonna ride it until it dies for as long as I can though!

  4. I don’t like giving my money up front, esp for a company with bad customer service. I’ll stick with watching movies every few months on Sunday mornings for half price.

    • Totally understand that. Have you ever looked at Sinimeia? We should be reviewing that soon but they have better customer service and a monthly plan. Something worth considering.

      • I like Sinemia better, having done both. I buy tix for both my husband & I together – in advance, sitting together, & no problems with getting theater loyalty points. I prepaid $203 in advance because just a whole lot cheaper. Sinemia, too, fluctuates a lot in price. I may not have even gotten their best price but for $16.99/mth for up to 2 movies/mth/couple, seeing just 1 movie covers the bill.

I put these charges on ANEX. Whenever a company is in trouble & services aren’t rendered, AMEX removes the charge no questions asked.

  5. They have a rule against canceling and signing up again. Thy have a several month cooling off period to signup again.

  6. I don’t think it’s a necessarily a scam or “too good to be true.” Time will tell if it is a bad/sustainable business model or not. I’d love to know if they get discounts or kick-backs of some sort from theaters, or if they rely entirely on breakage. I doubt it’s the latter. I think theaters are happy to have them sell otherwise empty seats (to get concession revenue), since the pass can’t be used for the high-demand/new movies that are usually in the 3D or premium-sound theaters.
